At Lisa Quinto Wellness, we are passionately committed to helping mothers of addicts reclaim their lives and rediscover their true power. Through one-on-one coaching, group programs, and transformative retreats, I guide my clients on a journey of self-discovery, empowerment, and deep healing.
A key focus of our work is helping clients establish powerful personal boundaries, raise their standards, and reclaim their personal power. These essential tools not only lead to personal growth, but they are life-changing steps toward reclaiming a sense of self.
One of the most common struggles our clients face is people-pleasing—a habit many don’t realize can lead to significant mental, emotional, and even physical health challenges. People-pleasing fosters regret when we can’t say no to others, and discomfort when we try to say yes to ourselves. It fuels procrastination, self-abandonment, and self-sacrifice, all in an effort to keep others happy. This constant worry about what others think can cause us to apologize unnecessarily, and, as a result, we slowly lose touch with our own needs.
In trying to meet everyone else’s expectations, we may start to isolate, withdraw, and numb ourselves—whether through endless TV shows, social media, or other distractions. In a way, we develop our own addictions, using these distractions to avoid our emotions and feel safe.
I lived this pattern for years, and it took a serious toll on my health. I struggled with low self-esteem, turned to food to self-soothe, and neglected my own well-being. Saying yes to others at the expense of myself became a reflex—canceling my own plans to meet others’ needs, leaving things unfinished, and feeling both regret and frustration. It was like dragging a heavy weight through life, feeling powerless to change. I thought that by saying yes, I was creating happiness for myself and others. But it wasn’t true.
Does this sound familiar?
When you learn how to break the people-pleasing habit, life changes. Not only do you experience greater happiness, but you also build stronger communication skills and relationships. By practicing self-care and putting yourself first, you’re teaching your loved ones what’s possible. You’re showing them the power of self-love.
To truly love others, we must first learn to love ourselves—because we cannot give what we do not have.
When we put ourselves last, we are giving everyone in our lives the tired, depleted, resentful, worn-out version of ourselves. When we put ourselves first, we are giving everyone in our lives the best version of ourselves. Happiness, joy, and fulfillment are all an inside job. We have been programmed to sacrifice ourselves to show our love to others, while we abandon ourselves and seek validation outside of ourselves, driving us further from our connection with our source—God. We train people how to treat us by what we tolerate for ourselves first. When we raise our standards for ourselves, we show others how to do the same.
Having a family member in addiction creates trauma. The family member in addiction is likely to have unresolved trauma as well. Trauma is not the event that happened—the abuse as a child, the alcoholic parent, the divorce or another major loss; the event is “traumatic.” The trauma is what happened inside you. As a result, you get disconnected from your emotions, from your body, and you have difficulty being in the moment. When we heal our traumas, we recover. What is recovery? It’s reconnecting to ourselves, our emotions, and our body. Healing trauma is not so we can handle more trauma, but so we can experience more joy, happiness, and fulfillment. The great news is it’s never too late to heal your trauma.
Healing trauma with horses. Horse Wisdom is the practice of connecting with horses. They allow us to put down the heavy things we are carrying—those things that fill our minds with a need to be busy, to find a way to numb what seems too scary to allow. The things that cause us to judge ourselves and create negative self-talk. Horses have a way of seeing through all of this to who we truly are. They show us this with non-verbal communication without judgment. This allows us to see our blind spots and things that we have been avoiding. We cannot intervene in a world we cannot see; once we see it, we can begin to let it go.
